UNIT 1- COSTUME DESIGN PROJECT

I have chosen to write my essay about the role of a costume designer. The costume designers job is extremely important as they ensure that all the actors look like the character they are playing. this adds to the magic of the theater and makes the shows more believable and more appealing to the eye.
Costumes can be hand made or rented or bought.

Being a costume designer requires a lot of skills, including being able to work under pressure and meet deadlines, having knowledge about historic costumes and modern fashions, being able to budget and an eye for detail. This means it takes a very creative, gifted and experienced person to take up this role. A good costume designer will have skills in arts and crafts and textiles, and should be able to sew.

A costume designer earns between £13,000 and £35,000 per year. They will work closely alongside the director and will help to make their visions come to life while still thinking about the practicality and durability of the costumes. They will also work with the hair and make up team to make sure that the look that the character has is corresponding as a whole.

The process of making a costume can be complicated. Firstly they have to make a sketch of their initial ideas, they then might have to do some research to make sure the costume idea is historically correct they then have to think about how easy it will be to dance sing and act in the costume. The costume designer doesn't only think about the clothes but the accessories too. They then have to think about what materials they would like the costume to be made out of and stock them. And then they will have to make the costume usually by sewing by hand or on a machine and gluing and cutting. They also have to take into consideration the size of the actor or actress the costume is for and make sure it fits appropriately.
